Occupational accident

If you have had an accident at work or on your way to or from work, you may be entitled to compensation. Employees are covered by the employer’s compulsory insurance based on the collective agreement and are entitled to compensation from the employee’s accident insurance. You may also be entitled to compensation from Sjúkratryggingar Íslands. If the accident can be attributed to incidents for which the employer was responsible, a special right to compensation may also arise from the employer’s liability insurance or against the employer himself based on the tort law. This can for instance be due to mistakes or negligence of other employees or inadequate equipment at the workplace. In the case of a work accident where a registered vehicle is involved in the employee’s errands, or on the direct route to or from work, the rules on traffic accidents apply to compensation for the accident. It is important that accidents at work are reported immediately to employers, Sjúkratryggingar Íslands, the Adminstration of Occupational Safety and Health and the relevant insurance company. It is also important to go for a medical examination as soon as possible after the accident. Reports need to be made to ensure the right to compensation. Therefore, it is important to seek the help of a lawyer as soon as possible due to occupational accidents.

If you are in any doubt, you can consult our lawyers. The first appointment is free of charge and without obligation. Our fee is entirely performance-based and subject to the condition that you receive compensation. Do not hesitate to contact Slysaréttur if you have been in an occupational accident. It costs nothing to check your rights.

The compensation

You may be entitled to compensation for temporary loss of income, suffering and permanent disability, as well as reimbursement of medical expenses incurred as a result of the accident.

The process

It is important to report an accident at work as soon as possible so that the right to compensation is not lost. We can help you with that. Afterwards, we assist you in gathering information and data about the damage. When all the data is available, an assessment of the consequences of an accident is carried out, but usually it takes at least one year from the accident until its permanent consequences can be assessed. We help you through the evaluation process. After that, compensation will be settled. Most of the time, an agreement is reached on a compensation settlement and we take care of sending a compensation claim on your behalf. In the event of a dispute regarding the liability for compensation or the amount of compensation, we will take care of seeking a solution by the relevant arbitration committees and/or courts.
